SOUTH GALLERY EXHIBITS

SOUTH GALLERY EXHIBITS
The South Gallery rotates exhibits every few months using both artifacts from our collection and loaned items.

Our current temporary exhibit is "Marion Helland: Nine Decades of Civil Rights Service." In 1965, Marion Helland responded to an ad “Teachers WANTED to Teach FREEDOM” and migrated down to the segregated American South. There she began her lifelong commitment to social justice, documenting her life's work in 50 boxes of journals and photographs. She brought those boxes with her to Spencer, where Marion spent the final years of her life. Now, Marion's family has chosen us as the first museum to share her story with others using her personal artifacts. This exhibit will showcase Marion's dedication to Civil Rights including her time teaching in the Freedom Schools, camping on Capitol Hill with the Poor People’s Campaign, and more.

This exhibit will on display at the Clay County Heritage Center beginning August 16 through December 17, 2022.
